Beta Psi Omega Chapter was chartered on Saturday, May 7, 1938, in Austin, Texas in the South Central Region. The Beta Psi Omega Chapter was chartered through the dedication of Dr. Connie Yerwood and other members who discuss the need of organizing a graduate chapter in Austin. Dr. Yerwood’s guidance and hard work culminated in the chartering ceremony which was performed by the 2nd South Central Regional Director, Marie Viola Butler Taylor. She was assisted by Mattie Bedford, Alyce L. Bradley, and Louise Davis Shivery. Beta Psi Omega Charter Members include: Connie R. Yerwood; Dora Jones Taylor; Lillian Burwell Lewis; Mary Agnes Yerwood; Mable Leverett Robinson; Henrietta E. Roberts; Alberta J. Armstead; Mary E. Branch; Doris Ann Collins; Breta Walker Grannum; Helen Smith Hammond; Nanie Belle Jenkins and Eva Gwendolyn Lyons.
Beta Psi Omega Chapter sponsors three undergraduate chapters: Beta Kappa Chapter, Huston-Tillotson University; Delta Xi Chapter, The University of Texas at Austin; and Upsilon Alpha Chapter, Southwestern University.
Today, Beta Psi Omega consists of a diverse group of over 200 members. Together these dedicated women have distinguished themselves in numerous professions, including education, law, medicine, business, religion, public relations, state government, communications, homemaking and public service, and have gladly utilized their time, skills and talents to uphold the purpose of the sorority.
Over the past 85 years, Beta Psi Omega has provided exemplary service distinctive to the residents of the Greater Austin area and surrounding cities of Pflugerville, Manor, Round Rock, Cedar Park and Georgetown. Since its inception, our commitment to sisterhood and service continues to shine bright as we lead, serve and impact the community providing service to all mankind. Beta Psi Omega will remain both visible and viable in the community as we continue to work to execute the International Program Initiatives and the vision of our illustrious Founders.
